About

Saint John is one of the parishes of Grenada. Its capital is Gouyave. It is known locally as the action city and the place that never sleeps. Fishing is the main industry. Gouyave is also the home of Grenada's biggest nutmeg factory and of the Dougladston Estate and old Spice Plantation.

History

Gouyave, known to many as the town that never sleeps, or action city, got its name from the English Queen, married to King George III, Queen Charlotte. Today, you can still hear people refer to Gouyave as Charlotte town. During the French  control of the island, the town's name was changed to Gouyave because of the  vast amount of Guava trees that was growing at the time.

Calendar of Events

Every Friday night: Fish Friday

29th June: Celebrated by Grenada's fishing communities, the Fisherman's Birthday Celebrations honour the feast day of St Peter and St Paul which falls on 29 June. The day begins early in the morning with religious services during which fishermen and their boats are blessed in the hope of receiving protection whilst at sea. The day then takes on a more celebratory feel with many communities holding special events with boating races, fireworks displays and copious amounts of food and drink.
