On the way here, north from the capital, visitors pass through some of the prettiest fishing villages on the island. Hidden among the red roofs of Gouyave is the factory where spices are sorted, dried and milled. The Dougaldston Estate is a traditional plantation in the center of the nutmeg- and cocoa-growing region.
Capital Gouyave has many aliases - it was named Charlotte Town after Queen Charlotte, a mixed raced Portuguese princess who married the English King George I I I. The French renamed it Gouyave after the guava trees that grow abundantly there. Also know as the “Town that never sleeps”. Gouyave is also the fishing capital of Grenada and the 29th June is Fisherman’s Birthday. This annual celebration is when fisher folk bless their nets and boats. Sailboats from all over Grenada and region traditionally come to Gouyave for a day of competitive racing.
