Capital Gouyave has many aliases - it was named Charlotte Town after Queen Charlotte, a mixed raced Portuguese princess who married the English King George I I I. The French renamed it Gouyave after the guava trees that grow abundantly there. Also know as the “Town that never sleeps”. Gouyave is also the fishing capital of Grenada and the 29th June is Fisherman’s Birthday. This annual celebration is when fisher folk bless their nets and boats. Sailboats from all over Grenada and region traditionally come to Gouyave for a day of competitive racing.
