Grenada Carnival

Shortnee

Shortnee dates back to the sixteenth century and derives from the ‘Pierrots’, a once popular carnival mas in Carriacou. They are masked so that they cannot be recognised and appear as a restless, imposing band. Some people believe that the term ‘shortknee’ originated from the short length of the trouser leg that each reveller wears. The most celebrated shortnee band are from the villages of Gouyave and Chantimelle.
